"I choose doctors (which is a luxury not generally available under government provided health care) based upon their medical skills and reputation."

That luxury is not available to a lot of people, not just people under government provided health care programs. While the US system can be fine if you have good insurance, for the millions who don't have good insurance, or who have no insurance, it's rather horrible. I think adequate care for all is probably better than fabulous care for a few. After all, the few who want to opt out can, and those who don't have the resources to opt out will still get adequate care.

"The care was adequate."

I'm not sure why we don't want adequate care for all? I just don't see the NHS system in the UK as a bugaboo.

We picked our own doctors in England.

I choose doctors ... based upon their medical skills ...

I have to ask. How do you determine the medical skills of your GP? What measurable criteria do you use?
