It all depends on your definition of science. The modern scientific method was developed in Europe a few centuries ago. If you want to use a looser defininition, there were natural philosophers, doctors, artisans, etc. earlier - both in the Islamic world, the classical Greco-Roman world, in India and China.

2000 years ago the ME was more civilized place than northern and central Europe. No doubt about it. Also no doubt that the ME has gone backwards in terms of civilization since then.
