Special forces were central to both the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. They were half-way through their mission in Afghanistan when they were redeployed. They never got to rout out bin Laden and associates. Their talents were instead wasted on preparing for a meaningless invasion of Iraq that would be exploited by the very people they should have been hunting down in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The invasion of Iraq was a mindless mission that cost us dearly and set us up for the worst of all worlds -- a much stronger recruiting base for terrorists, civil war, possible regional war and a huge US military overstretch that is accomplishing absolutely nothing except making us look like monkeys and giving a range of people somebody to shoot at. The invasion of Iraq was devastating for America and enormously helpful to bin Laden et al.
