I can't remember the name of the guy who cinched for me the realization that I was not to become a mathematician after all, but I can still picture him coming to class barefoot with very long hair and a dog. I guess it's like the minor league baseball hotshot who faces a major league curveball for the first time.

As this was an honours class with an open format, he and the prof would get off on discussions that would leave the rest of us gasping in their wake. The genius in question went off to Princeton the next year, where he was one of 16 participants in the graduate math programme. I hope he did well.

I never took another math course, but did make a lot of money tutoring for sociology statistics classes...
