Part of the problem with "changing course" is coming to grips with the course we are on. Fact is, while we are the world's sole "superpower", but we live in a world where there is a greatly diminished role for superpowers unless you are planning on a game of thermo nuclear war. On the diplomatic front, we have proven to be anything but a superpower. This does not stem from any lack of brilliant Americans. It stems from a bias among elected officials to buy into their own hubris about our military capability -- all the more so if it fires up the hometown crowd, thumping their chests over a beer sitting safely by the barbeque. What the US fails to do is to be a true diplomatic superpower -- a true leader of the free world. We overuse our military and underuse what makes us so remarkably special -- our freedom. Worse -- we are now being stripped of our freedoms and we have been cowered in the name of patriotism to shut up and "support the troops". Mindless militarism is our worst enemy. I am not suggesting a pacifist stance -- far from it -- we must be willing to fight for our freedoms. But until we rebuild and unleash our diplomatic capability, we will we doom ourselves to being a has been world power on the run. Until we come to terms with this issue, too much of our energy will be wasted debating which is the best military option. We are truly on the wrong course -- understanding the course we are on is the first step in changing course.

If you have something to say to me, please do so to my face. It is totally impolite to do otherwise.
