"The question is what will happen when Al Qai'da is vanquished from Iraq (or at least neutralized) and the people have to then deal with their history of oppressor and oppressed."

Good question. I suppose there will be a multitude of outcomes rather than one. Home grown Sunni extremists may be waiting for their turn to rise up, there are extremist Shi'ia that may intend to fill in the Al-Qaida gaps, while Al-Qaida could and probably will refocus their efforts on another region, until they are powerful enough for a return engagement.

Hopefully the Iraqis will struggle to maintain progress made and continue (assuming they make it) on living in liberty under an autonomous government.
