All of the states in the region with kurdish populations should cede their territory to the new state. That includes iran, syria, and turkey. I think the land is considered strategic and the kurds are hated for not being arabs. Although moslem they wear colorful clothing and some even have blond hair. Kurds are more european than arab or turk.
Your point is well taken, but never will happen. Best one can hope for are semi autonomous regions within states. Even iraq kurdistan is probably better off within iraq than without. Turkey has some reticence about invading iraq but might have little or none about invading independent kurdistan.

Elroy,

I wasn't placing judgement on the legitimacy of Kurdish aspirations for their own ethnic nation/state.

But just look at the map of what qualifies as "Kurdistan" and see how much of Turkey would have to be surrendered to create it:

I will state that I'm not in favor of ethnically homogenous countries. Ethnic nationalism breeds xenophobia, and often, elitist visions. But sometimes such ethnic partition is the only solution to prevent ongoing violence (eg: Balkans).

The only reason I make an exception for Israel, is merely because history seems to display a repeated tendency by other cultures to exact progroms and genocide against Jews. But also mitigating my view of Israel is the fact that 20% of Israeli citizens are Arab. But were Israel to suddenly become more fanatical in "purging" its society of any non-Jewish presence, they'd lose my support.
