Making govt so small that it cannot protect and defend itself is counter productive.

I concur. Protecting its people is the most salient federal government function.

But not wanting to carry all the water for NATO is not the same as not wanting to protect Americans.

NATO primarily protected Europe from the Soviet Union with American money and might. We could still have mutual protection treaties with NATO members for any current threats without the NATO overhead and disproportionate US cost, for all the good they would do us.

So I don't see why you would find NATO in it's current form so necessary.
