<But there are other major issues that deal with our relations with russia, europe, latin american, china that also matter>

The world is changing so rapidly and our place in it is now so confused. It is time to rethink where we should be going. We need to redefine our role as a world leader in a changed world. We cannot continue to be a strong actor on the global stage when are finances are in such bad shape. Cheney's quip that our deficits don't matter is central to the weakness we are going to have to work our way out of -- as indeed deficits do matter. Our relationship to China and Russia has assumed that neither can afford to defy our authority, and yet as their economic fortunes soar and ours sag it seems that the shoe is now on the other foot. China is making great economic and diplomatic inroads into Africa, and Russia seems fed up with all the hollow cold war bluster from Washington. Russia was 'defeated' because we were so much stronger economically than they were -- I wonder what happens as our economy shows increasing ill health and theirs flourish.
