I've lived in various countries - India, Oman, NZ, Aus, UK, US. With the exception of Oman, taxes are usually at around 40% in most countries. The cost of living in India is much lower than the cost of living in the US.

As an example : If I eat out every day, it would cost me about $20/day for food in the US (assuming non-expensive restaurants).
If I did the same in India, it would cost me $5/day.
