They were PARTIALLY successful: they created a WEAK, INTERNALLY DIVIDED state that would only come together to DRIVE THE FOREIGNERS OUT. (Counter to Churchill and Lawrence's expectations, the British were militarily defeated in a short time, and driven out. :-) Since then, only strong Dictators have been able to keep the three dissimilar provinces under one central control... and only by repeatedly massacring many of the locals. We could NOT do that --- only the locals can arrive at a political decision over partition that will stick. If any foreigner (that includes us...) tried to IMPOSE a solution, it would be opposed and defeated by opposition from most of the locals. But, the GOOD NEWS is that we don't have to 'impose a political division on the folks in Iraq... they are ALREADY trending in the direction to do just that. All we have to do is get OUT OF THE WAY, and stop slowing down the process... trying (futilely) to stave off the inevitable. (And, not so incidentally, if the local Shiites and local Sunnis want to fight each other for a long time, sucking in resources and attention from surrounding Sunni and Shia states... that would all be very good for us. The 'Islamic Jihad movement' would be turned inward, turned on itself, in a massive religious/civil/resource war --- weakening both sides, taking us out of the target sights, and perhaps ultimately creating the necessary conditions for Democracy and pluralism... possibly dragging down into the dust bins of history both the corrupt Saudi Monarchy, and the corrupt Iranian Theocracy. All GREAT NEWS for the region, and the world.) All that is needed is to stop the idiots in this administration from continuing to harm American interests with their wrong-headed, vision-less, counter-factual failed policy. History and political dynamics are trending in our favor --- all we need to do is play it smart and we will greatly benefit.
