While I agree with you that initiative and will power are major factor in one's success, I think you are missing an important point. Just by the virtue that the said immigrants had the courage to leave their homeland and family and friends behind to strive for a better future in a foreign land without much in their pockets, they are in the upper crust of humanity in terms of courage and initiative. To expect others to be like them is no more realistic than to expect everyone to have the same workout discipline as an NBA or Olympics athlete. The question then is, how badly do you want to succeed in the goal of reducing the poverty cycle?
