But I am talking about the majority. The "poor" are not just a static group. They also get added to for a variety of reasons. For example because a middle class family had to work too hard and did not spend enough time with their teenagers who ended up making the wrong choices.

More often however the reason is a lot simpler. A very large number of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck but the character of risk in this country has changed over the past couple of decades. Lose your job for year, go through a divorce, a major medical expense, or any two major events and you can easily join the rand of the forever poor.
