Just my opinion on the beans. When I cook pintos I wash them really well check them out looking for rocks. The dirt washes out. Pick out the discolored ones, darn, should have said to do that before washing.

Then I boil them hard with 3x the water. I never pour this off. This creates a great bean liquor. Add as much garlic as you like. Grunch it, peel and add. At least 6 gloves for me. Lots of fresh ground pepper and salt should have been added at the beginning of the boil. This is for 2 cups of beans. You can't over do on the garlic. You may need to add some water.

Now you go to a medium simmer. Cook them covered till tender. Then decide if you want refried. Hopefully you cooked enough to to enjoy some each way.
