Anti-nuke sentiment is from Green Party influence. The funny thing is that Germany is beginning to import electricity from France as the electricity markets within the EU are more liberalized. Everyone knows that 80% of French electricity is generated by nuclear.

Wind is effective in the Baltic Sea where there are some major wind farms as well as a lot of places inland. Windmills are present in most rural areas.

US seems to lack an energy policy, but there are some offshore areas that have never been drilled for oil/gas as well as an abundance of coal. The EU does not have much energy to tap inside its borders.
