I consider the export of Wahhabi Islam by Saudi Arabia to be the primary root cause of many of the problems we are seeing which only accelerated in the vacuum following the Soviet Union. Describing the threat today as modern terrorism maybe somewhat arbitrary, but it denotes problems that have reached a new level of prevalence and danger.

"What's the difference with (I suppose) "pre-modern" terrorism, except that "modern" is after the fall of the USSR? And why does that mean anything?"

After the Soviets, fearmongers needed a new bogeyman, and all that was there were terrorists. Some bought it, but after living under 30,000 nuclear weapons that could drop on my head in 30 minutes for my entire life, the terrorists seem like the stateless, trash talking, mostly powerless punks they ARE.

We're MUCH more likely to stroke out from anger at the chimp Nero.
