I recall Saddam denying he had WMDs. I do NOT recall him boasting of them.

He fired scuds into Israel with NO WMDs. There was no evidence he had them and plenty that he didn't.

He primarily didn't want USA spies snooping around under cover of "WMD inspections". Quite understandably, given the intentions of the USA.

The death rate of "innocents" during Saddam's reign wasn't all that much greater than now I guess and was probably a less.

He was hanged and killed for a more orderly and sensible revenge massacre than the Haditha murders. He probably even got the perpetrators. He killed no women or children. Sorted out the likely prospects and killed them. The innocents were collateral damage [a popular term these days and we are supposed to accept it].
