Great story. You are a fortunate son!

We used to have hummingbirds nesting on our property when I was a teenager and if you settled yourself unobtrusively in the right spot they would do their stoops right above you, a little unnerving until you got used to it. Hummingbirds will also fly up and inspect you from a few feet away once they get used to you sitting someplace they are interested in.

And I used to play ultimate frisbee on a field frequented by swallows, and sometimes between games we would get into games of dodgem with them. You could of course never get close to touching them but they would fly right up and then veer aside at the last minute once they realized we were paying attention.

My annual visitors these days aren't as showy and don't interact with me, but I still get a lot of pleasure seeing them, or their offspring, show up every year.

Mind you, it has been very sad to watch the number of songbirds decline year after year. They are one of the great joys of life.
