I really believe they were covering for the Tillman family's benefit.

What is going on now is for Henry Waxman's benefit. He is holding hearings on it. He doesn't give a damn about Tillman, or anybody in the Military. He just wants Bush's blood.

One of the problems with doing something iffy for someone else's benefit is that the recipient might have a different idea of his best interest. I recall the family being upset over the lie, preferring to hear the truth. Had the family valued the attempt to hide the truth, things would probably have proceeded differently.

I was under the impression that you retired under the highest rank attained regardless of rank when retiring. Perhaps that is just enlisted or my memory is faulty.
