They have to be street legal, pass crash testing, and have scores of issues to deal with, but the main thing is getting the price down. It just takes time. Microwave ovens, VCRs, DVRs, and now plasma TVs have all gone through the same kind of development.

"Sometimes I think they need to "work up" from a golf cart instead of "working down" from a typical internal combustion vehicle. Start with the basics and add what you need instead of trying to duplicate the gas passenger car. "

Government regulations on autos currently make that impossible. They should eliminate them for electric cars, to stimulate innovation.
