I worked in the summer from the age of 15. First job took two busses to a bad 'hood in Chicago. I made $1.50 an hour doing shipping and receiving and the women who worked on the machines made minimum wage, I think it was $1.25.

A couple of years later I got a summer union job in a steel place. Made $3.85 an hour... at the time it was big money, enough to support a family.
