This is where the misunderstanding seems to be, mj. I totally agree with you. But formula is still available for any who choose it, or need to use it, and the only "mandate" was that the formula companies, for whom this is a huge advertising market, are no longer being allowed to give out the free formula in the freebie package.

You bring up an very important point. One of the facts that has emerged in all the research is that obstetricians are NOT doing their job in this area. They aren't current with the facts on the growing benefits we learn constantly about breastfeeding (such as lower risk of ovarian and cervical cancer for breastfeeding mothers), and they take a very neutral position, apparently not considering it a part of their job to prepare their mother-to-be for the decision, a decision that should be made well before the delivery, with parents having all the facts to make an informed choice.

But a mandate to only breastfeed, I will be right there with you waving a protest sign.
