Kumar,

We did that (before I was part of the 'we') in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I dont see no condemnation around. Matter of fact - we are the only country to have used nukes as a weapon in war.

There was PLENTY of condemnation.. but most of it came AFTER they recovered from the sheer awe of the destructive power they were witnessing.

Even now, people question whether the use of Little Boy and Fat Man were justifiable under ANY circumstances. There was considerable controversy here in DC over the Enola Gay display at the Dulles annex of the Air & Space museum with someone throwing red paint on it..

And to top that off, for 40 years "WE" and the Soviet Union threatened each other with total eradication..

But none of this is to the point I made.. Our usage of the atomic bombs were based upon the decision that decimating 2 Japanese cities was preferable to incurring 1/2 million American casualties (and millions of Japanese casualties) by invading the Japanese home islands.

In fact, the WHOLE REASON for the Manhattan Project was NOT aimed at Japan, but at Nazi Germany, which had it's own nuclear weapons program. It was this effort on the part of a totalitarian regime that prompted the US to spend billions to beat them to the punch.
