Here's another interesting wrinkle. The State of Alaska is trying to revoke Exxon's leases on huge oil/gas deposits because of failure to develop them. So what you've had is American oil companies making huge investments in risky places like Russia and Venezuela, only to be robbed. Meanwhile they could forfeit huge reserves on US territory, that could theoretically be taken over by the Chinese! Of course it won't happen because the US Congress would go berserk, but if I was one of those Chinese companies I would try just for the sake of creating mischief!
