>>>Mr. Flaherty's surprise decision to tax income trusts after the Tories explicitly promised the opposite in the last election<<<

I shot from the hip a little bit when I jumped into the post Halloween Massacre last fall. My reasoning was as follows:

1) NG was down but would move upwards eventually kicking up holder payments (jury out);

2) The Loonie would rise on Canadian oily export growth and the FED running the presses (bingo);

3) A 15% yield is a 15% yield, (bingo)

4) It would also provide some cushion (flight to safety) from what we are experiencing this week (jury out);

5) Those puppies got oversold and would bounce (bingo);

6) Flaherty would be reversed if on nothing else public/senior outcry (come to poppa).

I still haven't done all the DD I might have. I have read lots of executive summaries on the analysis of income trust taxation proceeds vice a normal corporate structure. Most indicate that the Canadian government would get more revenue (at least from the oily trusts) with the current trust structure. Why fix what isn't broken. The government can cite all of these studies and have a credible reason to reverse.

I can't double down on the trusts here (too much margin currently deployed against Bear Stearns and its ilk), but I might add a long call or two. I think that Flaherty has done beaucoup damage to all of his conservative buddies and the steely knives will be out Monday morning. Monday afternoon could be quite pleasant.

I did get into a complete HTE position last week.
