It will force America to fix its consumption addiction. Easy, plentiful credit, is like providing an addict with more drugs. America needs to adopt policies that encourage savings and discourage consumption. Nothing will prompt American politicians to adopt such policies, unless some crisis makes clear that these policies are necessary. I wish China provides such a crisis by exercising its "nuclear" option.

As I have pointed out in the post below, it is pretty easy for America to adopt policies that are friendly to savings and hostile to consumption.
