the guy is nuts. didn't he learn anything from Bush trying to change soc sec. He the elderly will have a heart attack just listening to him never mind the democrats telling them he is going to take away their prescription plan etc.

go attack the fbi , seems the cia did a pretty good job on bush, what makes him think he can control the fbi and cia , they will fight him and more and more ghosts will appear in washington post, nytimes, latimes.

great for him to get it off his chest, stupid to think he can run the nation without getting some support of those in congress, gov behind him. getting the public vote will only get him locked up in the White House. Perhaps that is what we need for four years,, someone to sit at the desk and veto everything congress tries to pass.

Couldn't tell if you put this header in, or if Broder did...I went to find the link you forgot, and see it was yours....It sounds pseudo-elitist to me, and perhaps you didn't mean it to sound that way....

You said: The question is, can anyone who uses words like "emolument" ever get the Republican nomination...

The actual link from the WaPo is:

washingtonpost.com

My guess is that Fred Thompson is going to do quite well, thank you very much! He is willing to be President, and will bring something to the table in addition to an ego...which in itself will be a major plus.

Perhaps the American people, both Repubs and Dems, are really ready for a President who is a straight shooter, can express himself clearly, and that has America's interest first and foremost.

>>>"There's no reason for me to run just to be president," he said. "I don't desire the emoluments of the office. I don't want to live a lie and clever my way to the nomination or election. But if you can put your ideas out there -- different, more far-reaching ideas -- that is worth doing."<<<

>>> But these issues -- national security and the fiscal crisis of an aging society with runaway heath-care costs -- "are worth a portion of a man's life. If I can't get elected talking that way, I probably don't deserve to be elected." <<<
