Bush called himself a "Compassionate Conservative". I guess thats what I am also. I oppose taxes, redistribution of wealth, nannyism and WASTEFUL spending as much as the next Republican, but I also support programs that MAKES SENSE and that are well run. Example, if I were President I would try to EXPAND Medicare down to age 50. Making it VOLUNTARY for those 50-65 to join and they would pay the FULL PREMIUM. I believe this would solve the REAL health insurance crisis (I dont think youngsters are the crisis) and it would cost the govt NOTHING and STRENGTHEN the Medicare POOL as younger people are generally healthier then older people but at the same time allow uninsured persons to get into the largest pool in the country and thus lower there premiums. The means to run such a program are already in place so the additional cost to the govt would be minor and far offset by strenthening in the pool. A WIN WIN situation. jdn
