Bush called himself a "Compassionate Conservative". I guess thats what I am also. I oppose taxes, redistribution of wealth, nannyism and WASTEFUL spending as much as the next Republican, but I also support programs that MAKES SENSE and that are well run.

Well, that's certainly a legitimate thing to be. The title may be something of an oxymoron but the concept is a reasonable political philosophy, I think.

But I question whether you can oppose all those things that Republican's oppose while including your "wasteful caveat." You're either against redistribution of the wealth or you're not, seems to me. Sure, if you're going to redistribute it's preferable to be sensible and not wasteful about it, but it's still redistribution. Concern about making good use of the redistributionist tax monies does not make them less redistributionist. What you're talking about favors big government with its social programs and its redistribution as long as that government is efficient and effective. That's the sort of thing they embroider and hang at Democratic Party headquarters. Even the Dems aspire to be good stewards.
