Possibly this can be done with regard to Europe.. But when it pertains to the Middle East, you just can't easily duck the critical role that religious conflict plays there.

It would be like telling people not to discuss ethnicity, or tribal affiliations.

It's sad.. and lord knows I agree with you that I would love to "secularize" the discussion and eliminate the religious overtones. But with both Islam and Judaism, both are very political in how they influence regional policies by the respective governments.
