It all stems from Multiculturalism, Hawk. Because Multiculturalism believes that there are only relative values that exist within cultures, we are only allowed to judge "our" culture. "Our" values are no good when applied to some "other" culture, you see, and it's "orientalist" to even attempt it.

Of course, nobody can really use this system because it self-contradicts itself. If you don't believe that there are any real values except relatively then how can you believe in this overarching Multiculturalism in the first place? But a kind of semi-thought-through system, a pose, has taken hold of the left, in which all cultures must be equal (& don't let's get started on how anybody defines what constitutes a "culture"), except for "ours", which being ours, is alone subject to judgement and is thus found to be uniquely bad.

This kind of thinking underlies much of the double standard applied to the Mideast imo.

Have you ever read the "Dr. Sanity" blog? Several working psychiatrists post there. I think you'd enjoy it.
