the eventual acceptance of Islam by the entire world is one of the basic assumptions of that religion.

Not a big deal. Christians have the same expectation and are under a certain obligation to spread the Good News. ("Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.")

Everybody's recruiting or being recruited for one thing or another. That's life.

What IS a big deal is that Muslims are officially authorized to recruit by the sword.

We'll be much better off if most of them will remain our friends.

One way to promote this is to demonstrate to them (the moderates) that we are their friends. We did this in the Balkans but don't seem to get much credit for it.

The main long term purpose of our sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan is to prevent the islamist fringe from capturing political power in the Muslim world

I don't know if will work in Iraq.

As far as installing Islamist regimes, that would probably be the result if a free election in Egypt were held tomorrow.
