The problem is, Lane...that Islam intertwines BOTH political and religious belief into one. The other day there was a discussion about differentiating between religious and cultural. Now you are adding political. All three exist in all the major religions, not just Islam, and some people intertwine them/aren't able to differentiate them. [As an aside, it seems to me that this differentiation is the key to much if not most of the problem solving needed where religions clash. If we can define, for example, foot washing as cultural rather than religious, we can more sensibly deal with the question of the appropriateness of foot baths on campus.]
