<< What's the difference between eating a dog and eating a pig? >>

Culture.

There are cultures where it is ok to eat other human beings.

There are cultures where it is ok to eat dogs.

There are cultures where it is ok to eat pork and beef (pigs and cattle) that are raised to provide food.

It so happens that the U.S. very heavily belongs in the last category, although there are certainly a lot of upstanding citizens here who are vegetarians. Some of these will eat animal products such as eggs, cheese, and dairy products, while others will not do so. And no doubt a few here who will heartily and without pangs of conscience also eat dogs.

What's the difference between eating a dog and eating a pig? Pigs are smarter.

Dogs are cuter to most people. Dogs are also very social pack animals. They love to play and exhibit extreme loyalty(far above that of people). Once they are introduced into a family setting they consider themselves to be part of the pack/family. I'm guessing you haven't owned a dog?

Charles Manson had a high IQ, but I wouldn't have him to dinner.

According to Lewis and Clark in 1804-1806, dog is very good fare indeed. I wouldn't eat one, though.

I was drive-by posting last night (lots of typos and rushed sentences) and missed this question as I ran through.
I have no idea why I was being so theatrical about survival.

Being appalled by an animal blood sport is unrelated to the consumption of the animal. I find cock fighting equally disgusting, but I eat chicken without hesitation. Bullfighting is horrible, but I love steak. I probably would eat dog if I had to, although culturally it's pretty unacceptable here in America. (oh, maybe that's what I was thinking about last night- if Vick had to eat his dog to survive... but that isn't what this is about)

People do get fond of their animals, including pigs and calves. You can see kids crying when their prizewinning livestock has to be sold at the State Fair here in Texas. And dogs have the additional attraction of being loving and loyal. It doesn't seem irrational to me at all. We are raised on anthropomorphised animals: Charlotte, Bambi, Lady and the Tramp. Luckily at the supermarket a package of porkchops bears little resemblance to Porky Pig.

But food source or not, animal cruelty and abuse is not acceptable. And I think that IS rational.

Regarding VICK I guess I will add my 2 cents worth.
First off I like dogs, I own two. Second, I dont believe in nor would I ever wish to observe a dog fight. That being said, I think Vick is being punished PLENTY. To begin with he is going to lose a minimum of $10 million this year, plus his Nike Contract (dont know the value of that), plus the NFL has said his team can pursue getting back the $22million signing bonus he was paid plus he is INDEFINITELY SUSPENDED from the NFL, plus he now faces 12-18 months in prison. Finally, there is a good chance he will be PERMANENTLY barred from playing sports professionally (his contract was about $128 Million I believe). Now, what we may have done is create a man who will have to live a life of CRIME by taking away his ability to earn a living. Isnt that enough punishment? jdn
