So what difference does it make what Jesus or Mohammad did or did not say? It makes the difference that it is difficult to whip up a Crusade, and you really have to make a defensive case, as the Popes did for the Crusades and Ferdinand and Isabella did for La Reconquista. The Crusades were also an attempt at reconquest, since the lands in question had formerly been Christian and still contained many Christians. But if you're Muslim, its sooo much easier. You just reach into the texts, and you can tell your followers that it's their duty as Muslims to hate infidels, to make war on them, to conquer them, as Zawahiri and countless Salafi imams do daily. It's not a stretch. The 'sword' texts are right at hand in the Koran. You don't have to re-interpret them or make analogies. You just have to say: Allah said this, Allah means it, and this means you! Remember, Mohammed's life is normative to the pious Muslim. If Mohammed did it, it cannot be wrong. And Mohammed was a warlord who spread Islam by the sword, who made treaties with infidels only to break them as soon as he was strong enough, like the treaty of Hudibaiyah, who killed all the men of tribes that resisted and sold the women and children into slavery, like he did to the Bnai Quresh. If Mohammed did it, it must be right. Soooo much easier.
