Most people are serf-like. Meanwhile, NZ's position at number 5 in that index of freedom just shows how bad other places are. <Property Rights - 90.0% Private property is well protected in New Zealand. The judiciary is independent, and contracts are notably secure. > Private property is so well protected that it's illegal to cut down trees, "alter vegetation", build anything on the property, or make any changes to the property. It's illegal to do anything. By paying a lot of money to government agents, they MIGHT allow people to do particular highly circumscribed things. Don't even think of filling in a swamp, which is officially renamed a sacred Taniwha-bearing wetland. There are no longer any swamps. They are all wetlands and are mystical ecological places of worship, with boardwalks built out among mangroves to study the beauty of the mud. It's funny that you think it funny that holding onto personal property is a good thing in my book. Hippie communes were started decades ago with the caring and sharing ideology. I have stayed on one and know people who grew up on them and who own them. They gradually changed to a private property way of life. Then the useless dope-smoking layabouts could enjoy their lifestyle and those who liked to not have a leaking roof could enjoy their's. Socialist societies are somewhere between poor and starving. New Zealand is expanding Stockholm Syndrome way of life to include the majority of people. There is now a clear majority of people in New Zealand who live on government. No wonder the vote is for more of the same and the productive are leaving. Add up all the people working in the health, education and welfare departments, police, fire, administration, air traffic control, old people, hordes of welfare beneficiaries breeding like locusts, army, local councils, women's affairs [you'd think if they want affairs they could find somebody on the internet or at the pub], Maoris, electricity supply, water supply, sewerage, qangos, and legion of others. Plus all the contractors who work for the government. And all the people who work for the contractors. The government is the vast majority of activity in New Zealand. Little of it is achieving much of anything. It's mostly clock punching and money grubbing. There was barbarism everywhere hundreds of years ago. That was the law of the jungle. <Funny how christians came to dominate the world by exactly those same means...or had you not noticed . > It was necessarily a dog eat dog world because of the exigencies of population pressure and genocidal tribalism, which has been and still is the biological imperative in living things. Humans are moving beyond that, albeit slowly. Contraception has relieved the pressure. When wealth was something found, and survival was by hunter gathering or ownership of productive land, of course humans had to fight territorial tribal, alpha male, genocidal wars, like all animals. Now, wealth is created. Cyberspace takes near-zero resources but generates vast income and purchasing power. Population pressures are over. Trading around the world is the norm. Mqurice
