So why didn't they do it?

I can speculate, but it would be a lot more interesting to read a Palestinian's answer. Unfortunately, we don't seem to have many of them posting here....

I'm surprised the people in Gaza don't declare themselves separate from the other Palestinians, declare Gaza an independent nation, and leave the West Bank and Palestinian diaspora high and dry to figure out there destiny separately from Gaza. Gaza has a nice coastline, no issue with regard to control of Jerusalem, and based on its recent turmoil a desire for self-rule rather than Abbas's PA rule. In fact, I'm not only surprised that the people of Gaza aren't pursuing that route, I'm surprised that the "quartet" aren't advocating it as well. Why do you think the quarter and especially Israel is bolstering Abbas and the therefore supporting the logistically near impossible idea of one contiguous Pal nation rather than trying to solve the Pal problem in pieces, Gaza being the first piece?
