Why do you think the quarter and especially Israel is bolstering Abbas and the therefore supporting the logistically near impossible idea of one contiguous Pal nation rather than trying to solve the Pal problem in pieces, Gaza being the first piece?

The answer to that has to do with the question I asked about the PA: why didn't they declare the nation of Palestine?

Answer: When you declare a country, you must declare some borders for it. When you declare borders, you claim the land inside those borders (though others may dispute the claim), but you effectively cede your claim to land outside those borders.

So here's the question: if Hamas were to declare Gazastan an independent nation, what would that say about the rest of Palestine 'from the river to the sea' and the 'occupation of 48' and the 'occupation of 67' that they have so often sworn to overthrow? But if they declared the state of Palestine in the whole of Mandatory Palestine, what options would Israel have to respond to the claim? Options that Israel doesn't have now?
