gm never cared about expenses. there were very profitable years ago and never really took a hard line with uaw. generous is in understatement. they could care less about expenses back then because they could pass it along to the consumer. yes, you paid for the those benefits all along and it never borthered GM because they had little competition.

GM was also know for big time spenders at all conventions. suite of rooms,, nothing but the best, free tickets to all the big shows,, big private dinners... expense accounts were never questioned or limited... you got a new car if in sales every year back then.. gm took the car off your hands and discounted it through purchasing dept to sell it for you.

They got fat and lazy and let the business get taken away.

GM and Ford and other large coporations should have been forced to put the money aside for employess contracted health care and pensions which were bargined for, and they earned, as they accrued.

The big scam taking place now, is corporation after corporation, is filing for bankruptsy because they spent the money they now owe their men and women workers who worked for 30/40 years to earned it.

The workers are owed these health benefits and pensions, but as the corporations spent the money (often on large pay for management) now they can't pay the workers what they owe them and in a bankruptsy court the workers often lose most, or all of their pensions and health care.

It is a national disgrace.
