Growing up, living on the West Coast - I never encountered communities such as you speak of...I do know there was/is a large Italian community in SF - but they spoke English..Oh, Chinese in Chinatown speak Chinese...it's a only recent phenomenon that now Americans have to learn Spanish to compete in the job market (govt jobs - bilingual preferred) I'm surprised we're not paying homage to the "native Americans" and speaking Chocktaw as a result. And who says they were here first? What ever happened to Kennewick man - the european whose presence predated "natives" whose remains were scurried off for a proper "indian burial." Who designated hispanics as a minority anyway? Because they're not a minority - not in TX and soon to be the majority in CA...was it the the anti-Christian, pro-pedophile ACLU...now there's a 'union' I dislike.
