You're saying two different things here, though unintentionally, I suspect: 1. "If I miss the target for a Subject with 1 message, the font is too small." ...."greater leading is not a solution" 2. "it's usability and speed. Having to be unnecessarily careful to hit the unread message count or to hit Reset and not Remove are a waste of time and why it's worth my persistence to get this right." Leading would give you greater "target differentiation". By definition, they are ... further apart so you don't accidentally hit the "near misses/near hits". Which was sorta my point that leading isn't really well understood, but still an important point of perception. It would give you a bigger target point --- or, more accurately, a more foregiving "not miss by so much" point, which is equally as good from a HUI POV.

If I miss the target for a Subject with 1 message Well, 1 is the loneliest number, and also the hardest number to click on when it's a link, in almost any font size. Perhaps adding a leading zero to numbers less than 10 would help in that regard. IHUB addresses this by adding the word "unread" after the number, which makes for a larger target. And more space between Reset \| Remove would help too, or perhaps replacing one of the words so they don't have the same shape, e.g. Reset \| Unmark
