I didn't mean to imply that "divide and conquer" within the varied religious, cultural, ethnic and geographic strata of the Middle East (or the world, for that matter) should be the only strategy....just that it was a strategy that has worked TIME and TIME AGAIN over history. As one strategy among many, it would work now, IMHO. We don't need to export Jeffersonian democracy to peoples who don't want it, can't understand it and don't trust it. What we can do is build off their own specific foundations...find the cracks we can exploit with their "neighbors" and promote our national interests in the bargain. We are saying much the same thing...Watching the neocons still trying to push the proverbial round peg in a square hole is painful. It's not just that there is a better way...there are probably a dozen better ways. Let's keep trying different things.
