when I was in Italy, the white "table wines" (ie. only available locally) were outstanding bargains. They were some of my favorite whites, even compared with expensive french burgandies (which were some of the only white wines I enjoyed, prior to sampling the Italian whites). Perhaps the only white wines I enjoy more are the Alsatian whites. Well, then there's the Sauternes...

PS My brother opened a bottle of the 1976 Chateau D'YQuem at my wedding. Simply the best wine ever.
