Iran the people are a natural allie as is iran the geography. Shiaa islam is also not an enemy but the mullahs who run iran often perverting islam for their own personal use is the wild card as is the latest political manifestation, ahamadijad. Irans national interests like outside of arab regions for the most part except as their role as leading shiaa state. If they werent shiaa their policy to the arab mideast might just be ambivalence and self defense. The US role cuts across national, ethnic and religous issues. US could wipe iran out in a NY minute but its economic cooperation could help make them a great model for economic progress. My head hurts when i think about all this stuff. Cold War was so simple in comparison. Folks on both left and right think this is all simple based on their preconceived views. Thats where the danger lies in naive left and bush right. I am supporting Hillary for that reason alone. Those of us who came from our generation (not someone elses like bush did) have understood complexity and shades of grey for quite some time. Bush-speak or Obama-naivite or Clinton pre-9/11 complacency will not cut it going forward. I think Hillary knows this too.

Iran is doing a lot more than defense, Sam. Sending Qods forces into Iraq, raiding over the border, trying to kidnap Coalition soldiers and salors (they've tried several times and succeeded with the Royal Navy), shipping in arms and explosives to the Mahdi Army AND Al Qaeda, send Hezbullah into Iraq to train the Shia militias.

This ain't just defense, this is positively daring the US to confront them.
