Jefferson was removed from his chairmanship. I thought he was also removed from the appropriations committee, though I may be wrong about that. Murtha has some excellent competition from a number of Republicans, many of whom are now out of Congress either in jail or waiting for prosecution. DeLay--jsut to name one--was far more venal than Murtha when he had the opportunity. Not to mention Sen "bridge to nowhere" Stevens, who has even irritated some of his own constituents who he has taken care of so well over the past decades. Of course, you could pair Stevens with Byrd and call it a wash. Except that Byrd at least has the excuse that his state is one of the poorest in the country while Stevens' state has all that oil money to fall back on. And Byrd has risen to a high level of statemanship in recent years, something that even some Republicans agree on (though I'm sure most BushBackers won't).
