With such a clear indication that the Fed is not going to let the problems in debt markets spread any further, Alliance & Leicester (LSE: AL.L - news) and Standard Life (LSE: SL.L - news) showed strong gains, but Northern Rock (LSE: NRK.L - news) has since given back all yesterday's recovery.

The beleaguered mortgage lender was rocked by rumours that Lloyds TSB is preparing to launch a bid for the group worth just 200p per share.
