Containment and deterrence go together in preventing war. But in order to work you have to be ready to fight and be believable.
I will ask you again. How would you have fought the cold war without containement (which by the way was the moderate policy choice at that time compared to war) and deterrence (muutal deterrence). If you agree that containment worked then, why cant it work now? My feeling is that liberal folks like you living in countries that rely on the US for their defense will defend the policy historiically in some cases but never in real time because you are scared of what happens if the other side decides not to be contained or deterred. Even back during the cold war, thats where the impetus for the peace now movement came from. And i understand very well that europe would have been the primary battlefield but now europe and america are both under threat. Note that even little denmark is being targeted by al quaeda per NYTimes today.
