Just watching the money supply figures, the trade imbalance, the budget imbalance (vs. Canada), and the obvious fact that Canada was full of natural resources, especially energy, needed by the U. S.

Also, traveling in Canada then was just too cheap. Chicken lobsters on PEI were cheaper than bologna, and motel rooms were two-thirds of what they cost in the USA.
