While shift-apple-3 grabs your entire screen, shift-apple-4 spawns a pair of crosshairs that you use while click/dragging your mouse across a specific area of your screen. you will see a highlight of the captured area as you drag. once you release the mouse the image format (.png, .jpg, .pdf, etc) file will appear on your desktop.

sorry - i meant shift-apple-3 is screen dump . my terminology misuse.
it creates a .png file on my desktop. And thanks for the additional hint to easily change to change file type from .png: (double click onit & save-as)
