Lots of people praise Apple products for the long years of reliable service they get from them. But I know there was a problem with the iBook. My friend bought one just before the MacBook came out. At age 2 years (a few months ago) it froze up at startup time. We did some web searching and found numerous references to this, going back as far as 2003. Google "iBook logic board" or similar and many incidents will show up.

The cause was overheating of a chip solder point on the main logic board (motherboard) that eventually caused the electrical connection to fail. Possibly it was a soldering problem in the board assembly process. There is some very detailed information about this online, and we used this to take apart the iBook and resolder the chip connection. This fixed it for a couple of months but the problem came back.

Many people bought new iBooks or got their logic board repaired (some under warranty) but the same problem happened again after a while, because the logic board defect was never corrected.

Other solutions involve using a clamp to squish the iBook case to the left of the touchpad where the bad chip connection is located, or an internal shim to put pressure on the chip.

It would be great if Apple would acknowledge the problem and maybe give owners of defective iBooks a big discount on a new MacBook. People should get more than 2 years of life from an Apple notebook.

I certainly have.

When my son dropped it.

It gave up the ghost slowly and valiantly, though, and I somehow got a few days of use before it finally croaked.

Replaced it with another Toshiba which is wonderful. Not a single problem so far.

As an Apple Genius I saw many laptops that needed repairs. I personally have owned 4 Apple laptops with the first being a powerbook 5300.

I have experienced years of use out of all of my laptops and the only issue I've had with my current 17 inch G4 was with faulty third party memory which I replaced with Crucial memory.

All the issues present in my prior laptops were immediately fixed by Apple under Applecare or extended warranty programs. Apple's laptops lately have had issues but the biggest were because of faulty batteries not Apple design flaws.

Apple's support is best in the industry because it takes care of it's customers. Unless you damage your equipment because of user error, design flaws get covered once Apple acknowledges them.

Regardless of the hardware stuff the OS is far superior to Windoz.
